Placement Destination: Cagliari, Sardinia – Science Research in Metabolomics at University of Cagliari
Making the decision to spend my placement year in Sardinia has honestly been the best decision in my life. Although it was a little scary to go off to another country on my own, I have never regretted it for a second.
Having previously been used to a London lifestyle, experiencing the Italian culture and life in Cagliari has changed my perspective on life and I know I will never look at it in the same way. London is always so busy, you see people rushing to their different destinations and spending what feels like an endless amount of time on their sweaty, uncomfortable, everyday commutes. Having moved to Cagliari I felt like I finally could breathe. Time slowed down, I started enjoying my walks to and from work, taking in the beautiful views and atmosphere of the city on the way. Since the Italians in general are not very strict when it comes to being on time, this also gave me an opportunity to start having a more relaxed and calm way of life and appreciate that you really do only live once, hence there’s no point of adding unnecessary stress to your life.
Due to exchange programmes such as Erasmus, I have had the chance to meet people from all over the world, learning about different cultures and traditions. Meeting people from Morocco, America, Spain and many other countries has opened my eyes to how diverse the world really is.
While exploring the breathtaking island, I visited some charming Sardinian villages and saw the astonishing beaches with their turquoise waters, which have left me hungry for more travels.
I have also had the opportunity to attend salsa and bachata classes which were held weekly for Erasmus students. Here I continued my passion for dance and surely without this course, my experience in Cagliari would not have been the same.
In short, life in Cagliari has been full of heavenly pizza, coffee, dancing and of course the memorable people, with whom I have made some lifelong friendships. I have created some unforgettable memories and I will always look back on this year with a smile. Looking forward to the next couple of months that I will be spending here makes me very excited to see what adventures I have yet to experience, places to discover and people to meet.
